Nicholas Johnson (NAJ for short) is a Los ANGELES-based filmmaker whose penchant for structure and narrative flow has gravitated him towards the post-production side of filmmaking.
Nicholas graduated from Arizona State University’s Filmmaking Practices program with an emphasis in editing. During his time at ASU, NAJ served as the Co-President of the University’s Association of Filmmakers, while also working at the school’s Creative Services department, where he assisted in the post-production of various industry media projects.
Since graduating, NAJ has worked behind the scenes as an editor for numerous local productions. His editing portfolio is diverse, consisting of music videos, marketed media, and various narrative shorts of wildly different genres. He served as editor on the period drama Lipstick, the highly-designed musical Campus Heartbeat, and the comedy short Hulk Hands. His flexibility with genre reflects his larger appreciation for the medium of film as a whole, and his willingness to expand his creative horizons.
While his skills are adaptable to any kind of production, NAJ’s long term goals is to continue to work as an editor for narrative feature length films. His obsession with pacing and structure make him a natural fit for this side of production, and his communication heavy process ensures that he can strike the middle ground between creative expression and economy of information. He takes inspiration from editing legends, such as Thelma Schoonmaker and Dede Allen, aiming to create active relationships with the creative voices of each project, in order to create the best version of the story possible.
